For those of you who are not HVAC specialists, the term "Initial Resistance WG" in the context of furnace filter pressure drop refers to the initial resistance to airflow measured in water gauge (WG), often expressed in inches of water column (in. w.g. or "wc).

Right now, you're probably wondering why all that HVAC jargon is important, also, w.g./wc? More like WTF are you talking about!?

It's important because this measurement indicates the amount of pressure required to push air through a new filter at a specified airflow rate.

Essentially, it's a metric used to quantify how much the filter impedes the flow of air when it's first installed, before any dust or debris starts to accumulate in the filter media.

This metric measures the volume of air that can pass through the filter at a given resistance. As for the (CFM), this stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. A higher capacity at a given resistance generally suggests that the filter allows for better airflow while still performing its filtering function.

The Protector (2-Ply) 16x25, which is a very popular and most common filter size, has an initial resistance of 0.21” WG while The Pet Whisperer (3-Ply) filter has an initial resistance of 0.31" WG at 400 FPM, respectively.
